Humulus Lupulus is also known as a common hop plant. It is one of the three types of Humulus of the family of Cannabaceae. The other types are Humulus japonicus and Humulus yunnanensis. Hop is used mainly in the making of beer as an ordinary preservative. It also imparts a bitter taste and flavor to beer and contributes a role in its preservative qualities. Alcohol creates a bad atmosphere for microbes to grow, and hops stop the growth of bacteria, which causes beer to go bitter. Large amounts of Humulus lupulus combined with high levels of alcohol can easily protect beer from going terrible, even when it is stored for longer periods under non-ideal conditions.

Magnolia Bark usage has been adopted from traditional Chinese medicine, where it was being used as an anti depressant. In conjunction with other ingredients, like Pinellia ternata, Poria cocos and Zingiber officinale, it has displayed effects that rival the ones of Prozac. Houpu, which is how Chinese call magnolia officinalis bark, contains polyphenolic compounds, mangolol, which is a bioactive compound with antifungal properties; and honokiol, a biphenolic compound which is known as an anxiolytic, anti-emetic, anti-depressant, antithrombotic and anti-bacterial. Honokiol in particular is a very potent anti-tumorigenic and neurotrophic compound, used to combat melanoma, leukemia, myeloma and sarcoma, as well as a multitude of cancers. It is also a known promoter of neurite outgrowth and has neuroprotective effects. There are no adverse effects known.
